A Look Back at the Traditional Medicinal Uses of Cannabis and its Evolution

Posted by Eric Dubbel on

Cannabis has been around for thousands of years and has been used in traditional medicine for just as long. It wasn't until the 20th century that its use became illegal in most countries. But let's step back in time to learn about the traditional medicinal uses of cannabis and how they have evolved.

The use of cannabis for medicinal purposes can be traced back to China in 2737 BCE. Emperor Shen Neng used cannabis tea to improve memory, treat gout, and aid in the process of childbirth. Over time, cannabis found its way into other traditional medicines, including Ayurveda in India and Ancient Egyptian medicine. The use of cannabis spread to Europe and the Middle East where it was used to treat various ailments such as asthma, migraines, and inflammation.

In the United States, cannabis was considered an effective medicine until the early 1900s. It was readily available over the counter and was a common ingredient in medicines. However, things quickly changed in the 1920s when the government began regulating cannabis due to racist and xenophobic beliefs. Despite its medicinal properties, it was classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in 1970, which made the study of cannabis and its medicinal properties difficult, if not impossible.

Recent studies have shown that cannabis is effective in treating a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, epilepsy, Crohn's disease, and multiple sclerosis. It has also been found to have anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties, making it an attractive alternative to traditional medications. While the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes is still illegal in many countries, a growing number are legalizing its use for medical purposes. The results are promising, as many people report significant improvement in their quality of life.

Cannabis has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a traditional medicine. From being used to treat pain, inflammation, and anxiety to its current use in helping people with a variety of ailments, the evolution of cannabis is nothing short of remarkable. As researchers continue to perform more studies on the plant and discover its benefits and dangers, its use is likely to continue to evolve.

Despite its complicated history, cannabis has an important role to play in traditional medicine. Its use as a medicine has been proven time and time again, and with the ongoing legalization of cannabis, people who suffer from various ailments have the opportunity to use cannabis as a natural alternative to traditional medicine. As we look toward the future, it is exciting to see what new discoveries will be made and how cannabis will continue to evolve in the medical world.
