Let's Explore the Effects of Sativa

Posted by Brendan Kelly on

Since the legalization of cannabis, both hemp and marijuana, we’ve learned a lot more about the strains we affectionately refer to as sativa, indica, and hybrid. The consensus among experienced cannabis users is that the effects of sativa aren’t as body heavy as the effects of indica.

The truth is, what we know as sativa and indica are actually hybrids. This is because of the careful genetic work that has been done to cultivate high quality cannabis and refine the desired effects. But the THC in both strains are the same, what makes the effects of sativa different are actually the terpenes.

The Deal With Terpenes

Terpenes are the compounds that give distinctive scents and tastes to cannabis, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and more. These compounds actually affect your brain and the chemicals it releases. Sativa strains are dominant in terpenes such as pinene and limonene. These terpenes, which are also found in various trees and fruits, are known to be refreshing, uplifting, and invigorating to the mind. This is why so many people feel that the benefits of sativa are creativity and energy. It’s even easier to understand when you think about how it feels to take a deep breath in a pine forest, or catch the scent of lemons. There’s a reason many cleaning products contain those scents.

This is not to say that sativas do not contain the same terpenes as indicas. It’s just that the dominant terpenes are different. Actually, both strains contain many of the same terpenes, just in different quantities. Indicas simply have different dominant terpenes.

What’s Your Preference

There’s really no right or wrong when it comes to preferring the effects of sativa over the effects of indica, or vice versa. It’s simply personal preference. It may also be about the time of day. Many people like the benefits of sativa for daytime use, and indicas for nighttime. However, it’s important to note that while the effects of sativa are widely accepted as “invigorating,” it is dependent on the individual’s unique physiology — how your body responds to the terpenes you introduce. This can mean that a sativa can make some people feel tired. It’s extremely dependent on your own unique body and how it reacts to the variety of terpenes in cannabis.
